I've probably mentioned these before but thought I would summarize:

Re-naming materials within another material doesn't(always) work, and when replacing a shader in a slot, the name label doesn't get updated. I somehow had a shader take on the name of what I was trying to replace with it, and I can't change it.

There's no option when right-click-paste inserting a shader into a slot(which is the only practical way to do so when you've got hundreds of materials)there's no "paste as instance" option.

There's no option to remove the instancing on a shader by right-clicking on it in a slot.

Often, for no reason, when trying to insert an instance of a material or texture, the option won't be available, seems to always happen if I try to use the same texture in two different slots on the same shader.

Thanks - I've logged these.

Hi Jim,

I'm trying to reproduce your naming problems and I wonder if you could give me some more information?

Re-naming materials within another material doesn't(always) work

Could you describe what happens when you attempt this? Where in the UI are you trying to edit the name? Does the name not stick or is the UI disabled?

when replacing a shader in a slot, the name label doesn't get updated

The name only changes if it starts with the default name of the material, for example Wood Texture. Once you have changed the name to something else, such as Wood Panel, the name sticks and does not automatically change anymore. But you should still be able to rename it manually. That's what I'd like to get to the bottom of; why are you prevented from renaming it? It would be great if you could send me exact steps to repeat this problem.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

1)Re-naming sub-materials doesn't always work when right-clicking on the slot and renaming, or whatever way one would normally do it, it doesn't stick. Of course it might be specific to my files, examples of which I've sent to Andy before.

2)If that's on purpose I'd call it a mistake. How am I supposed to have any idea that I've swapped something out(where the difference between one item and another could be one number out of 20)if the name at least doesn't update? It also results, when I DO manage to get instancing to work, in instances of the same sub-item with different names, so I'll be editing material X and wondering why material Y that doesn't appear to share any sub-materials or textures changes too.

Hi Jim,

When Andy gets back from vacation on Monday we will figure out the automatic name-changing issue. Until then, I'd like to just try to resolve the renaming problem. You say it doesn't stick when you rename from the right-click menu? Just to make sure I'm on the same page as you, could you tell me exactly how you are renaming when it doesn't stick? I mean, the right-click menu on the slot does not have a specific 'Rename' option so I need to know the exact steps to get to the part that fails. Also, since Andy is away I don't have access to the file you sent him; would you mind sending me a copy of the 3dm file in question?

Thanks in advance,

John

Well however it is one changes names, they don't stick, I haven't had a chance to look at Brazil for a few weeks.

I was just playing around with a different project and the way items in slots don't get re-named when changed is just not good.

I was using a shellac material with a couple of metallic carpaint shaders in it(which doesn't make much sense when I think of it but anyway....) I wanted to use photons to speed up the scene, but CarPaint metallic effects and GI don't get along, so (while I guess i could have done this to the whole shellac material) I though I would see if the Utility material would let me 'turn off' photon illumination for that material. I set up the Utility Material in one of the shellac slots, then to avoid recreating the Utility material I used copy and paste to copy it from one Shellac slot to the other. The result was no change in the name of the slot, so no feedback that it actually did anything, and no way of me knowing that item A and item B are copies. That's not good.

Hi Jim,

Sorry about the delay replying. Just to let you know we will be looking into this naming problem at some point in the near future. We haven't forgotten you!

Regards,

John
