Is this possible? I'm interested in colored glass that is almost clear where it is thin and dark where it is thick?

Carl,

Yes, use the absorption control in a glass material and this will provide the effect you're looking for. By varying the start & stop distances, you can vary the amount of absorption evident in the glass material. See the image 'Dragon-3' in the Gallery foran example image that does just this.
