Klatch,

'RenderWindow' and 'RenderPreviewWindow' commands will allow you to render a small section rather than the entire viewport. You may either type the command on the command line, or simply right click over the command line area and select from the options presented.

I added a button for these commands using the "Button Editor" Here is an image you can import that should clearly show its purpose.
