I suppose one would logically think this would happen to some extent, but I just noticed rendering out a largish image(2160 by 1620 )that the difference in speed with Rhino minimized was HUGE, like 2:30 vs 4:30 for this shot. Should it make that much of a difference?

Did you have "Low priority thread" checked?

And what did you have running in the foreground?

Nothing else in the foreground, I meant faster to render with Rhino hidden. I guess with a simple scene with small buckets the display couldn't keep up, just surprised how much faster.

That is interesting...what is the difference if you make the buckets as big as possible?

2:05 to 2:27, so not as much, but still a bottleneck.

I've just added a new setting to SR3 - "Display while rendering".  If you have renderings (animation frames, usually) that are significantly affected by drawing, then you can turn this off to speed things up.
