I suppose one would logically think this would happen to some extent, but I just noticed rendering out a largish image(2160 by 1620 )that the difference in speed with Rhino minimized was HUGE, like 2:30 vs 4:30 for this shot. Should it make that much of a difference?

Did you have "Low priority thread" checked?
And what did you have running in the foreground?

That is interesting...what is the difference if you make the buckets as big as possible?

Nothing else in the foreground, I meant faster to render with Rhino hidden. I guess with a simple scene with small buckets the display couldn't keep up, just surprised how much faster.
2:05 to 2:27, so not as much, but still a bottleneck.

I've just added a new setting to SR3 - "Display while rendering". If you have renderings (animation frames, usually) that are significantly affected by drawing, then you can turn this off to speed things up.
